the mtx75 gearbox..how it works.

Paul, I don't know if it will affect your thinking but the ecus are different on the manual and the auto, or at least, they have different code names.
I'll check the wiring diagrams later. (y)

Ditto. I’ve long promised myself that if / when I do the clutch it will be various other stuff that gets improved at the same time Inc 6 speed.
Although I recall reading here years ago that there was very little, if any, difference in the top gear ratios of 5 speed and 6 speed and they simply reduced all the other ratios a little in the 6 speed to slot another gear in place. Hence having a 6 speed box doesn’t necessarily improve fuel consumption or give a higher cruising speed.

That’s interesting TC thank you. I don‘t understand and I’m not asking for an explanation of what the gear numbers actually mean.
I do note on the ST220 5th is bigger at 0.9 compared to 0.77 on the ST so maybe the 220 is slightly better, lower engine revs or higher speed.
I also noted the ST220 final drive is 3.56 compared to 4.06 on the ST. That’s 220 is smaller.

Does this mean the output is back to being almost the same?

those ratios arnt for the mmt 6 speed tho.
they are for the differences in the 5 speed mtx box which was used on the pre facelift st220's
the 6 speed is altogether different.

tony!
is your speed sensor mount blanked off with a removable plastic cover (some were blanked off like this )or like mine never drilled out.
if yours is the plastic removable type could u have a look and see if it has the pulse ring inside(only when u get chance, i wont be doing this for a while)
will save me stripping the mondeo 5 speed i have u see.

a way of understanding ratio...

yes i googled this as it explains it better than i did :ROFLMAO:
gear ratio = rotations of a driver gear : rotations of a driven gear. For every rotation of the 45-tooth gear, the 15-tooth gear must rotate 3 times. This is true no matter how many times the 45-tooth gear rotates. The ratio between the rotations of the 15-tooth driver gear and the 45-tooth driven gear is 3 to 1.

Don‘t we need to take the effect of the final drive into account as well ?
All the gears are adjusted by the final drive, or rear diff for us more senior types 😀

Shirtyzeus your charts show
MTX 2.5 in 5th at 2.93
But the MMT in 6th gives either 2.7 or 2.85
So the MTX has a slightly taller 5th than the MMT has in 6th
So as I see it, possibly incorrectly, the 6 speed is less economical than the 5 speed. But that’s before taking the final drive into the equation.
I guess the final drive will bring the MMT back in to place with the MTX.

If the aim is to make the Cougar engine more economical in top gear or quicker in top gear then I stil don’t know which is best. Surely that’s more important than the Speedo drive.
Theres no point in going to 6 speed and fixing the speedo take off problems required to do so if the performance of the car is worse.
Please forgive me if I’m missing the point, maybe you just want 6 speed box instead of 5, in which case my query is pointless.
I guess acceleration off the line is a factor too but that’s a whole other scenario.

Yes the final drive always needs taking into account, its the final ratio result of slightly taller gearing with a 6 speed box, so in effect an overdrive of sorts, especially if mated to a 3 litre.
Personally i'd like to use a Jag 3 litre, but still looking into the mapping, not sure its feasable without a standalone ecu, but thats for my thread lol
