Buying a 2.5 v6 auto high milage thou!!

Thanks got your pm scunny really appreciate that mate, have just spent the last hour reading Alan's forum page from when he brought the car, some work and care has gone into this car, so guys you've helped me make my mind up iam not gonna have my brother in laws car, i hopefully have some money coming before xmas and fingers crossed will buy the one off Alan....

After all my brother in law doesn't know anything about this car, but from the way you guys praise Alan up and from what ive read on his forum page about this car, he's really put some time and effort into sorting these problems and making this car work and look how it should.

Iam no mechanic unless fixing my little lads chain on his bike counts....lol so better me thinks going with someone who knows about these cars.
You guys have been so great in your help and advise, maybe one day i can afford to buy you all a beer, well thats if ive not put the money in the fuel tank first...lol

Dean, we are here to help in our differing ways. I have benefitted more than anyone from the expertise on here, and you have a lot of local members who are normally more than willing to lend a helping hand.

What I would say, is that once you have bought your Cougar (as I am sure you will now), to access the subscribers section there is a small subscription fee but i have gained that back x 100 so far!!!!!

Sonn as i have that Cougar smile i will gladly pay the £13 i believe for the subscribers section, definatly a small price to pay when you can get some much sound advice..

I will be going over to Alans maybe at the weekend to get a painted scoop from him for another member, if you want to have a run over with me to look at the cat send me a pm and we`ll arrange it. I will be away working in Aberdeen till Thursday so no mad rush.
 
Regarding service history...

Chances are that when it was newish the first owner had it serviced on time. He/she would need to for warranty reasons and people plonking £22k on a new V6 Auto coupe will service it properly.

The missing bit in the middle is unfortunate, but that accounts for around a 3rd of it's life.

If there's history/MOTs for the last 3 years then it has had some maintenance done recently. New waterpump etc is a good thing, not bad. The wishbone bushes might be on their last legs by now if they're the originals but that's about it really.

To be honest, if it hasn't had any serious abuse, such as running dry and damage due to lack of cooling or lubrication (which wouldn't take very long at all to cause an actual 'break down') then so long as the car has fresh~ish oil and coolant in it now and has had recently then it'll be fine.

I'd agree about the automatics though. I like autos. I own a car with the excellent ZF 6 speed auto just now, and it's a great gearbox. The one Ford stuffed into the Cougar though was more a token gesture. It's an old 4 speed which saps a lot of power with a consequential serious penalty in performance and fuel consumption over the equivalent manual.

I wouldn't buy the car I have now as a manual, but I'm not sure I'd buy a Cougar as an auto either. I'm not sure it's luxurious enough and powerful enough to pull off the large GT feel like the XK or 3200GT, and I just don't think the CD4E is a very good gearbox.

Thanks mate after long thinking and all the read ups and advice on hear ive decided i am gonna go with Alan's car, less milage and body work is better than my brother in laws as his car down the n/s/r as some biggish scratches so theres more money getting this sorted.

Alan sounds a top bloke and with all the work i think i'd feel much safer in the knowledge thats its safe to drive etc specialy with 12 months m.o.t on it as well.

Alan certainly is a top bloke, and he has a sympathetic hand with machinery too... he's not the sort to 'fix' things by battering them with hammers until they submit!
 
So i know i am definatly doing the right thing, even my wife agree's and she ain't right often ... lol ok i can get away with that as she won't come on this forum :)
 
ive already got that grin and don't even have the car yet, but sitting in one and hearing that roar made me want one (y) and i know i won't go wrong with Alan or should i be calling him uncle al know :)
